<image:caption>Firework—The Lehua blossom has a legend around it that I tell with another image. Originally I was told that it was Pele's favorite flower and if plucked it would rain. I was told this on a hike I took with friends when I first moved to Hawai`i. As we passed an ōhia tree, a friend told me the Pele's favorite flower version. We continued our hike and about fifteen minutes later it started to pour. We turned around and when we got to the ōhia, we noticed the blossom was gone. I don't know why they blamed me, I did not pluck the flower.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Monet Dreams—Water lilies bloom from a Koi pond in Waikoloa. Water lilies are beautiful to behold, but they also have an amazing scent. Most people are not aware of this as getting to the water lily usually involves getting through the water in order to smell it. When I worked as a gardener at Lyon Arboretum, we had a small lily pond and when the lilies were in bloom, we would extend ourselves over the pond in order to breath in the subtle aroma.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Musa Ridge—Did you know that there are hundreds of different types of bananas, but that we almost lost access to them in stores because of monocropping? The top banana used to be the Big Mike (Gros Michel), but a virus nearly eliminated it and the major suppliers were almost put out of business. They found another variety that was resistant to the virus that impacted the Big Mike, the Cavendish, which is the variety you find in most grocery stores today. However we do not seem to learn our lessons as the Cavendish is now monocropped and risks the same fate as the Gros Michel.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hidden in Plain Sight—I was out taking pictures of native Hawaiian forest birds for an exhibit that only allows works of species of flora or fauna that are native to Hawai‘i Island. Spotting this 'amakihi (Chlorodrepanis virens virens), I took a few shots. Since I was in a native forest, I figured the plant was native also and because I am generally familiar with plants, I figured it would not be difficult to identify. I was in for a journey. After much research I discovered that the plant is native and is called Oha Wai (Clermontia peleana). It was thought to be extinct as wild pigs severely damaged its habitat and none were thought to exist. Then one day someone found them growing high of the ground in the crux of tree branches. So not quite extinct, but very close to it. So when I took this shot, I thought I might have gotten a shot of the rare alawi, or Hawaiian creeper, which turned out to be a more common 'amakihi. Meanwhile, the truly rare thing was the plant that I figured was pretty common.</image:caption>

<image:caption>‘Ohia, Lehua, and Pele—In the Hawaiian mythology of the goddess Pele is the story of Ohia, who was a handsome warrior that Pele desired. However, Ohia spurned Pele's advances as he was in love with and faithful to his love, Lehua. This infuriated Pele so she turned him into a gnarled tree. This upset Lehua so much that the other gods took pity upon her and asked Pele to undo what she had done. When Pele refused, the gods decided to turn Lehua into a beautiful red flower to adorn the ohia tree so that they could remain close forever. It is said that if you pluck the lehua blossom that it will begin to rain as Lehua is still upset when she is separated from her love, Ohia.</image:caption>

<image:caption>At the Edge of Darkness—Back in December of 2022, Maunaloa started erupting. Maunaloa is the largest mountain and volcano in the world and since most of the population on the Hawaii Island live on Maunaloa, it is big news when it erupts. Fortunately this eruption did not threaten any of the towns or cities on its flanks. I like going out to shoot before sunrise as the crowds are down and there are beautiful opportunities as dawn breaks. This picture means a lot to me not only because I think I caught a special moment in time, but it is also the last photo of mine that my father saw.</image:caption>
