Firework—The Lehua blossom has a legend around it that I tell with another image. Originally I was told that it was Pele's favorite flower and if plucked it would rain. I was told this on a hike I took with friends when I first moved to Hawai`i. As we passed an ōhia tree, a friend told me the Pele's favorite flower version. We continued our hike and about fifteen minutes later it started to pour. We turned around and when we got to the ōhia, we noticed the blossom was gone. I don't know why they blamed me, I did not pluck the flower.
Monet Dreams—Water lilies bloom from a Koi pond in Waikoloa. Water lilies are beautiful to behold, but they also have an amazing scent. Most people are not aware of this as getting to the water lily usually involves getting through the water in order to smell it. When I worked as a gardener at Lyon Arboretum, we had a small lily pond and when the lilies were in bloom, we would extend ourselves over the pond in order to breath in the subtle aroma.
Musa Ridge—Did you know that there are hundreds of different types of bananas, but that we almost lost access to them in stores because of monocropping? The top banana used to be the Big Mike (Gros Michel), but a virus nearly eliminated it and the major suppliers were almost put out of business. They found another variety that was resistant to the virus that impacted the Big Mike, the Cavendish, which is the variety you find in most grocery stores today. However we do not seem to learn our lessons as the Cavendish is now monocropped and risks the same fate as the Gros Michel.
